Finnlines' newbuilds to feature Corvus ESS

Corvus Energy will supply its lithium-ion battery systems to be installed on-board the shipping line's three brand-new hybrid ro-ro vessels.

The manufacturer's energy storage systems (ESS) will enable zero emission operations in ports. In addition, Finnlines' ships, having RINA's Green Plus class notation, will feature an air lubrication system to reduce hull resistance as well as scrubbers to comply with the 0.1% Sulphur Emission Control Area limit (since the ro-ros will be employed in traffic across the Baltic Sea).

The 238 m-long and 34 m-wide 1A Super ice class newbuildings, designed by Knud E. Hansen, will be constructed at the Chinese Nanjing shipyard and are expected for delivery in 2021-onwards. Each will offer 5,800 lane metres of cargo capacity.

"There is significant potential for fuel and emissions reduction in ro-ro ships as they are normally on fixed routes. Finnlines is at the absolute forefront when it comes to innovation and sustainable operations. They have invested heavily in technology for all their vessels to reduce emissions. Combined with a series of operational measures such as timetable planning and route optimization, as well as optimizing speed, load and trim, Finnlines continues their progress towards sustainable operation of their fleet operations," Roger Rosvold, Senior Vice President of Sales, Corvus Energy, commented.
