KIT to triple its capacity

The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications has earmarked €30m to develop the Kaunas Intermodal Terminal (KIT), aiming to increase its yearly handling capacity threefold from the current 55k cargo transport units.

Some €3.3m will be used to create a new 6.0k m2 parking lot for trailers, plus purchasing a container loader and a terminal tractor.

The rest of the funds will be directed towards installing infrastructure for handling military equipment. Here, the EU will provide half of the €26m spending.

A 12 ha public logistics centre will also open nearby KIT by 2026, according to Kaunas IN.

The standard and broad gauge rail networks meet in Kaunas.
